  • Mission CPR - 22nd June

    Fri 17 Jun 2016

Heart Start – Mission CPR On June 22nd, Quilters Junior School will be one of few Primary Schools selected by the British Heart Foundation to take part in their national day of promoting CPR.

Its message: “CPR isn’t difficult, but it’s the difference between life and death.”

At 9.15am, Year 5 will offer a CPR training session for any of their parents, carers or family where they, along with our brilliant Heart Start Team of volunteers, will show them how to do CPR and how to use the recovery position. It will be very practical!

On the day, the pupils will be making their own CPR awareness video for QTV and will be running a practical revision session for Years 3 and 4 in the playground.

If you have a child in Year 5 please join the children in school that morning, if you are able. You never know when you might need to use CPR to save a life!

  • New Quilters Junior School Handwriting Initiative

    Mon 04 Jan 2016

    Dear Parents and carers,

In light of the added requirements of the new National Curriculum we have decided to update our approach to the teaching of handwriting at Quilters Junior School.

Even in this modern age of computers, tablets and smart phones, writing is a fundamental skill at which all primary school children should become proficient during their time at primary school.

Our aim is for children to leave Quilters Junior School with the ability to:

    • write legibly, using correct letter sizing and formation and joining where appropriate

    • write fluently with increasing speed

    • adapt their writing style to suit audience and task

    • to present written work in a neat and clear manner in order to communicate effectively and to show pride in their work

In order to achieve this, from January 2016, formal handwriting teaching will take place in every classroom at least once a week. Every child will receive a new triple-lined exercise book in which to practise their handwriting. Children will be taught the correct letter formations and how to join their letters properly. There will be regular opportunities in class to practise new skills and presentation of work will be given increased status.

We will be adopting the Nelson style of handwriting, a plain, modern style which joins the majority of letters but has no lead in stroke at the start of letters. We feel this style is contemporary and more manageable than some of the fully cursive styles.

It is generally recognised that writing with pencil is the easiest way for pupils to learn to join efficiently and effectively.  It is easily corrected, less prone to smudge and the movement of the pencil, while joining, is virtually effortless.  To use a pen before they are ready will impede a pupil’s progress and development.  For these reasons, we have decided to take a ‘back to pencil’ approach across the school. From Monday 11th January 2016, all pupils (regardless of previous pen usage) will go back to writing in pencil. This will be explained fully to the children in assembly, on Wednesday 6th January 2016, so that no child is left feeling demotivated or set back in any way. We wish every child to have a ‘clean sheet’ with regards to pen usage and we will be working hard to motivate children to work towards the responsibility of using pen.

Once pupils have demonstrated that they can write consistently in a clear and legible way, they will be awarded a ‘Pen Licence’ and a school handwriting pen. This is an achievement to be celebrated and one which pupils will be encouraged to work towards, as it is an important and relevant life-skill. For some pupils, this will happen very quickly; for others persistence, patience and lots of practice will be required.

As an additional incentive, well presented work may be chosen to be displayed in the Quilters Museum or on our website. Books which contain good quality writing may also be chosen to be shown to a visitor, which will earn the author one of the more difficult to obtain Quilters Quest stickers!

We know that the children will rise to this new challenge with their usual energy and enthusiasm. We hope that you too will support us in our efforts to raise the profile of good presentation and clear, legible handwriting.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Kind regards,

    Mrs Amanda Friary

QUILTERS SPORT COMPETITION REVIEW – AUTUMN 2015

It has been an incredibly busy, but yet successful half term of sport for Quilters. Many of the children have represented the school in a range of sporting events. From the Billericay Cross Country races, in the early weeks of September, to the last event of the current term, BOCCIA.

As a school, we have always had a strong interest in sporting competition and with the support of Mr Wade, I have been able to take a new role of a specialist Sports Coach, alongside Sports Co-Ordinator Mrs Murray to hopefully further enhance sport and participation in sport at Quilters Junior School.

Fresh upon our return to the new school year in September, we entered our first competition of the new term, which was the Billericay Cross Country. Four of our teams progressed to the Partnership final stage with our year 3 boys and year 4 girls winning the competition! This means that we have the best year 3 boys and year 4 girls cross country running teams in all of the Basildon, Billericay, Wickford and South Woodham Ferrers primary schools. A special mention must go to Henry Ram, who won the year 3 boys race making him the best cross country runner at year 3 in the above areas.

October, saw us compete in the open Basketball at Billericay school. Champions Academy, who deliver our basketball coaching clubs and enrichment programme at Quilters, selected a squad to represent us in this competition. We played well but couldn’t score enough baskets on the day and secured a 3rd place finish.

Girls’ football was plentiful in October with two competitions. Firstly, we participated in the regional, open national tournament at Wickford Town FC. I strongly believe we have the best girls’ football team in the county and believed we would have progressed through to the latter stages of the competition. However, it wasn’t to be our day. Even though we were unbeaten, we finished second out of eight teams, with only the top team progressing. However, we put this right in our Billericay schools CVL Football league. We have 100% win ratio and currently sit top of the table. Well done girls! Our boys team currently sit joint 4th and still remain unbeaten; with a bit more clinical finishing in future matches I am confident our league position will improve.

Mrs Crannigan, who oversees our netball squad training, has taken the girls squad to 2nd in the league and is delighted with how the girls are playing. Mrs Murray, who also has vast netball experience has been assisting on match days and the girls are very appreciative to have two knowledgeable coaches on hand to offer them advice.

Our Tag rugby squad have qualified to the Partnership Final Stage in second place as have our Sportshall Athletics Squad. The rugby was played in torrential rain, but to their credit our players were not phased and battled through in difficult conditions.

Finally, alongside our SEN department, we took a squad of six children to play BOCCIA (adapted French bowls) and New Age Curling at William De Ferrers.  This was a great chance for even more children to compete in a sport and represent their school, which to their credit, they did admirably. Displaying great teamwork and sportsmanship throughout, the team excelled.

I would like to thank all parents that have given up their time to provide transport and support at our sporting events this term and look forward to continued success after the Christmas break.

    Yours in sport,

    Luke Moore

  • Stop the press! Essex County Council Teaching and Learning Short Review

    Tue 24 Nov 2015

    Dear Parents,

At our request, Iain Birtwell, one of Essex’s County Council’s Excellence and Standards Commissioners undertook a short, one-day review of Quilters Junior School and its Quiltonians.

As I’d expected, it went exceptionally well and I wanted to share excerpts of his report with you:

    Overall findings

For the full report, read 'the Quiltonian Times' fourth edition in the 'key information section'.

    • There is clear evidence throughout the school that demonstrates the school’s drive to provide the highest quality provision, leading to the high outcomes for all its pupils.

    • The school has developed an impressive consistency in its teaching. Throughout the school children speak enthusiastically about the way adults work with them, challenging, encouraging and supporting them to succeed.

    • The school whilst striving for the highest academic outcomes for children has not narrowed its curriculum to seek success in SATs, rather it has broadened it to engage and motivate pupils. Quilters Radio and Quilters TV clearly show the outward looking approach that has been developed by the school.

    • Children enjoy coming to Quilters Juniors, they gain significantly from their time in school enjoying success in a wide range of areas due to their commitment, high expectations from staff and from unswerving drive from school leaders. Quilters Juniors has much to be proud of and should look forward to its next inspection with great confidence.
