  • Stop the press! Essex County Council Teaching and Learning Short Review

    Tue 24 Nov 2015

    Dear Parents,

At our request, Iain Birtwell, one of Essex’s County Council’s Excellence and Standards Commissioners undertook a short, one-day review of Quilters Junior School and its Quiltonians.

As I’d expected, it went exceptionally well and I wanted to share excerpts of his report with you:

    Overall findings

For the full report, read 'the Quiltonian Times' fourth edition in the 'key information section'.

    • There is clear evidence throughout the school that demonstrates the school’s drive to provide the highest quality provision, leading to the high outcomes for all its pupils.

    • The school has developed an impressive consistency in its teaching. Throughout the school children speak enthusiastically about the way adults work with them, challenging, encouraging and supporting them to succeed.

    • The school whilst striving for the highest academic outcomes for children has not narrowed its curriculum to seek success in SATs, rather it has broadened it to engage and motivate pupils. Quilters Radio and Quilters TV clearly show the outward looking approach that has been developed by the school.

    • Children enjoy coming to Quilters Juniors, they gain significantly from their time in school enjoying success in a wide range of areas due to their commitment, high expectations from staff and from unswerving drive from school leaders. Quilters Juniors has much to be proud of and should look forward to its next inspection with great confidence.

Safeguarding Our Children - Child Line Assembly, Workshops and Website for Parents

I am pleased to be writing to tell you about the ChildLine Schools Service.  This is a nationwide service for every child in the UK in Years 5 /6 (in England & Wales).

This service will visit our school on Friday 6th November 2015 to work with years 5 and 6.  The visit will consist of a 30 minute assembly followed by a 60 minute classroom based workshop a week later. It has been specifically designed for primary school age children and all deliveries are provided in a sensitive and child-friendly way. The assembly and workshop(s) are given by ChildLine staff or trained ChildLine volunteers and pupils will be supported by school staff throughout.

The ChildLine Schools Service aims to encourage the children to identify with their right to be happy and safe.

It strives to encourage the understanding that any problem or worry that they may have is legitimate, and to share their worries – big or small – with their trusted adult; at home, at school, or with ChildLine.

The ChildLine Schools Service aims to give children:

    • An understanding of different forms of abuse, including bullying, and an ability to recognise the signs of harm or abuse

    • Knowledge of how to protect themselves from all forms of abuse

    • An awareness of how to get help and sources of help, including ChildLine.

One important question that ChildLine is frequently asked is:

Is there any information to help me discuss keeping safe with my child?

The NSPCC has a wealth of resources for parents and carers to help keep their children safe from abuse. The Underwear Rule, for example, contains guidance on having simple conversations with children to keep them safe from sexual abuse.

More information and downloadable guides (in a variety of languages) are available at www.nspcc.org.uk/underwear.

There is also comprehensive guidance for parents and carers about how to help keep their children safe online, including a tool which gives information about the top social networking sites. This can be found at www.nspcc.org.uk/shareaware

Please make some time to look at these websites; they are invaluable resources.

We are delighted to be able to offer this valuable service to our pupils, from the safe, familiar and supportive environment of their primary school. If your child is in Years 5 or 6, please see ParentMail for further details.

  • Going green - New solar panels

    Thu 05 Nov 2015

I am immensely proud to announce that Quilters Junior School has taken a huge step to becoming a ‘green school’, with solar panels now being stationed on our roof.

We will now produce enough energy to pay for our own consumption while being able to send some of this renewable energy back the grid, reducing the need for fossil fuels to be used.

Financially, the savings for the school will be in excess of over £200,000 over 20 years, with a net saving of over £150,000 for the school, once the panels have been paid for.  There is no initial cost to the school as all payments are made in arrears of money being both saved and generated by the panels each year.

Just as significantly, with a new ‘savings app’ linked to our solar panels and with a display screen in reception, we are in a strong position to teach the children about the cost of leaving electrical items on and about the savings (both financial and environmental) to be made by turning them off!  We can really educate them about the importance of being responsible at home with lights, consoles, TVs etc.

This project has taken three years to come to fruition as we needed to first persuade Essex County Council that our roof needed re-felting.  Many, many hours have been spent making this 'dream' a reality.

This whole project simply wouldn’t have happened without Nick Christian, head of our Finance and Premises Committee.  His energy and drive has been immense.  Thanks Nick.
